| CARDILLO MAKES AN UPLIFTING INNOVATION | ||
| BOSTON HERALD - Friday August 18, 1998 Bruised Hips, a sore lumbar, and 600 pounds on a steel bar. That's Steve Cardillo's recipe for innovation. A wildly painted Humvee parked on Broadway in Everett suggests the one time weightlifting champ has arrived. The pains and sweat from his days in the iron game are paying off. Steve Cardillo makes weightlifting belts to die for. Michael Jordan fancies them. Pro- wrestlers swear by them. Reebok licenses them. "I've never actually paid anyone to wear one," says the 36-year-old Cardillo - a late '70's hockey star at Everett High who's done millions in sales on a lemonade-stand endorsement budget. "But I have the crème de la crème" of celebrity users. That would be Dallas Cowboy Emmitt Smith, wrestling start Hulk Hogan, a slew of obscure but very large men in the world of powerlifting, and of course Jordan, who sports a Cardillo belt in a photo from is fawning picture book "Rare Air." Even the First Lifter, Bill Clinton, has tried Cardillo on for size. Weekend warriors like President Clinton and pro athletes alike use the leather belts for support while pumping iron. Hard-core types like Cardillo cinch their innards into knots to perform amazing feats of strength. | ||
